Nvidia Vera Rubin Reimagines CPU for Agentic AI
Nvidia has launched Vera Rubin, a full-stack AI platform featuring seven co-designed chips, new networking, and a custom Arm-based CPU called Vera with 88 cores and up to 1.8 TB/s of coherent CPU-GPU bandwidth. Partners including Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, CoreWeave, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure are already deploying the system. The core argument behind Vera is that agentic AI has put the CPU back on the critical path, creating bottlenecks that more generic cores cannot solve. Nvidia built its custom Olympus CPU core from the ground up to handle the sequential orchestration work between GPU inference passes, targeting stronger single-thread performance, lower latency, and better memory behavior for agent workloads.
