Microsoft's New Dev Box Kills Cloud AI Costs
Microsoft unveiled the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box at Build 2026, a compact desktop powered by Nvidia's Blackwell-architecture RTX Spark chip and 128GB of unified memory. It delivers one petaflop of AI compute, enough to run models exceeding 120 billion parameters entirely on-device.
The machine directly challenges cloud AI pricing by eliminating per-token API costs. Microsoft executive Pavan Davuluri said devices like this will support roughly 100 billion parameter models, enabling developers to build and test large AI systems without relying on remote infrastructure.
