Microsoft Openly Challenges OpenAI, Anthropic for Customers

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is positioning his company as a direct competitor to OpenAI and Anthropic, urging enterprises to keep their AI infrastructure separate from model makers. Speaking on a quarterly earnings call following a record $331.8 billion fiscal year in revenue, Nadella warned that relying on frontier AI labs risks data leaks and vendor lock-in. Nadella promoted Microsoft's own MAI model family and Maya chips as cheaper alternatives, citing a recent Hugging Face security incident as proof that companies cannot depend on a single AI model. While acknowledging frontier models have a place, his core message was clear: do not trust OpenAI or Anthropic enough to rely on them.
