AMD's Helios Rack System Challenges Nvidia's AI Dominance
AMD unveiled its Helios rack-scale AI system at its Advancing AI conference in San Francisco, positioning it as the industry's highest-performance AI rack. The system, set to ship later this year, has already secured major customers including OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft, Oracle, and Anthropic, with Microsoft expanding its Azure infrastructure using Helios and Anthropic committing to deploy up to two gigawatts of GPUs. AMD CEO Lisa Su also introduced the Venice-X CPU for data centers, expected in 2027, and projected the AI accelerator market will reach $1.4 trillion by 2030, approaching the size of today's entire semiconductor market. Su attributed the surging compute demand to the rise of agentic AI, which requires significantly more processing power than traditional AI applications.
