Seattle Times, Newsday Sue OpenAI and Microsoft
The Seattle Times and Newsday have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging the companies used their journalism to train AI without permission. The suit warns that generative AI could leave the journalism industry broken beyond repair, describing it as a snake eating its own tail.
The case is notable given that Microsoft and OpenAI have previously funded Seattle Times journalism projects and fellowships. Microsoft expressed surprise at the lawsuit but said it remains open to finding solutions. The suit follows a similar 2023 case filed by The New York Times against the two companies.
