IBM Shrinks Mainframes to Democratize Enterprise AI
IBM has unveiled compact versions of its z17 mainframes and LinuxONE 5 servers, designed to bring high-performance, on-premises AI infrastructure to a broader range of enterprises. The new rack-mountable z17 systems support up to 82 cores and 18 terabytes of memory, while the LinuxONE Rockhopper 5 can replace 23 comparable x86 servers with 83% less power consumption.
The launch targets enterprises needing to run sensitive AI workloads on-premises due to regulatory, latency, and cost pressures. IBM's Spyre Accelerator enables generative AI and agentic applications alongside transactional data, backed by quantum-safe cryptography and an updated infrastructure management platform supporting infrastructure-as-code.
