South Africa Drafts AI Policy, Full Rules by 2028
South Africa's Cabinet has approved a draft national AI policy for public comment, with full implementation expected in the 2027-2028 financial year. The policy centers on six pillars including responsible governance, ethical AI, and job creation, while opting for a multi-regulator model rather than a single AI oversight body.
Law firm Baker McKenzie called the move a shift from principles to concrete regulation, noting AI governance will integrate with existing frameworks covering data protection and cybersecurity. The policy is expected to lay groundwork for a future National AI Act, while current AI activities remain governed by existing legislation.
