Sony, Warner Sue Anthropic Over AI Copyright Theft

Sony Music Publishing, Warner Chappell, and other major music publishers have sued Anthropic and two of its co-founders, accusing the AI company of illegally torrenting, scraping, and downloading copyrighted works to train its Claude AI model. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, and Anthropic says it will defend itself in court. This is not Anthropic's first copyright battle. The company was previously ordered to pay $1.5 billion in the Bartz case after a judge ruled that acquiring copyrighted content through piracy was illegal. The new lawsuit is broader, specifically targeting alleged illegal torrenting of millions of books containing lyrics and sheet music.
