Queensland to ban AI deepfake creation
Queensland will outlaw the creation of sexually explicit AI deepfake images of real people without their consent. Attorney General Deb Frecklington announced the legislation on Sunday, describing the current gap in the law as a loophole. Offenders could face up to three years in prison.
Currently, only distributing such material is illegal, not creating it. The government plans to consult experts across education, legal, and online safety sectors from April, with the legislative process expected to begin midyear. Labor's opposition welcomed the move, saying it would consider the legislation on its merits.
