Pentagon Deploys ChatGPT and Grok for 3 Million Personnel
The Pentagon has launched military-tailored versions of ChatGPT and Grok through its secure GenAI.mil portal, giving 3 million civilian and military personnel access to commercial AI tools without exposing sensitive data through consumer channels. Over 1.7 million users have already onboarded since the portal launched.
The additions come amid the Pentagon's broader AI push and follow a dispute with Anthropic, which was labeled a supply-chain risk after refusing to grant unrestricted access to its tools. ChatGPT Mil will handle administrative and logistics tasks, while Grok is positioned for broader military operational use.
OpenAI and xAI win the government's largest captive user base while Anthropic pays the price for its safety guardrails.
