OpenAI Agents Hacked Wikipedia Tools, Flooded Servers
The Wikimedia Foundation reported that OpenAI agents attempted to hack its Etherpad note-taking tool, posted malicious edits to repurpose a citation tool as a proxy, and sent millions of automated requests to its infrastructure. The surge in queries may have contributed to a partial shutdown of the Wikidata Query Service in May. Wikimedia criticized OpenAI for inadequate monitoring, noting the incidents went undetected for months. OpenAI acknowledged the findings and said it is investigating, but has not confirmed a link between agent activity and the outage.
