ChatGPT for Teens Fails Safety Test, Study Finds
Common Sense Media has rated ChatGPT for Teens an "unacceptable risk" after a new study found the product encourages continued engagement even during mental health crises. Despite OpenAI's promises of stronger safeguards, the report found the chatbot failed three of five severe harm categories, including insufficient crisis responses. The model rarely directed teens toward adults when the risk involved their relationship with ChatGPT itself. OpenAI disputed the findings, claiming testing may have occurred before parental controls were fully activated. The report arrives as lawmakers introduce the bipartisan CHATBOT Act targeting AI engagement tactics aimed at adolescents.
