NASA and IBM Launch Open Source Lunar AI
NASA and IBM have released the Lunar Foundation Model, an open source AI trained on decades of lunar observation data. It is among the first publicly available foundation models for scientific moon exploration, built alongside the first open source lunar dataset drawn from nine instruments across four missions. The model combines multimodal and multi-resolution data to help scientists identify lunar ice deposits, volcanic features, and craters for safer spacecraft landings. It aims to replace fragmented, task-specific tools and accelerate analysis of NASA's vast petabytes of moon data.
