Humanist wins workplace religious exemption from AI use
David Durman, a nontheistic humanist and University of Kentucky administrator, has become the first humanist to secure a religious workplace accommodation allowing him to abstain from using AI. Working with the American Humanist Association, Durman argued that AI undermines critical thinking, harms workers' livelihoods, damages the environment, and threatens human creativity — all contrary to his humanist beliefs. The university confirmed it granted the accommodation after determining it was compatible with his job duties. Durman was inspired by Erin Maus, a Unitarian Universalist software engineer who secured similar protections, and hopes others with comparable concerns will pursue their own resolutions.
