Grammarly quietly launched an "Expert Review" feature in August 2025, generating AI writing suggestions under the names of real people, including Stephen King, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and deceased professors, without their knowledge or consent. A small disclaimer noted the experts had no affiliation with Grammarly, but the feature used a checkmark icon suggesting legitimacy. The feature went unnoticed until March 2026, when Wired reported it was using deceased professors' names. The Verge then found it generating suggestions under the names of its own staff writers. Grammarly, which rebranded as Superhuman in October 2025, faced backlash from both users and the real people whose names appeared in the tool.
