Google has rebranded its Vertex AI platform as the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, targeting the growing challenge businesses face managing hundreds or thousands of AI agents simultaneously. The platform is built around four pillars: build, scale, govern, and optimize, with tools including Agent Studio, Agent Runtime, and a pre-built agent marketplace featuring partners like Salesforce, Oracle, and Workday. Governance features appear central to the pitch, with Agent Identity assigning cryptographic IDs to every agent, Agent Gateway enforcing security policies, and Agent Anomaly Detection flagging suspicious behavior. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian positioned the platform as a comprehensive backbone rather than disconnected services, as enterprises increasingly delegate complex, multi-step tasks to autonomous AI systems.
