Google Teaches AI to Say 'Best Guess'
Google researchers have introduced 'faithful uncertainty,' a metacognitive technique that aligns an LLM's responses with its internal confidence levels. Rather than forcing models into an unhelpful answer-or-abstain binary, the approach allows them to offer hedged responses like 'My best guess is' instead of hallucinating false information.
The technique has significant implications for agentic AI systems, acting as a control layer that helps autonomous models determine when their knowledge is sufficient and when to trigger external tools or search APIs. This addresses a core challenge in enterprise AI deployment, where hallucinations remain a major obstacle.
