Google Bets $40 Billion on AI Rival Anthropic

Google plans to invest up to $40 billion in AI company Anthropic, starting with an initial $10 billion, with the remaining $30 billion tied to performance milestones. The deal expands an existing partnership in which Anthropic uses Google's custom chips and cloud services. The announcement follows Amazon's recent $5 billion investment in Anthropic, with up to $20 billion more possible. Anthropic, which recently tripled its annualized revenues to over $30 billion, is also investigating unauthorized access to its powerful but unreleased AI model Mythos, withheld due to cybersecurity concerns.
