Florida AG subpoenas OpenAI over FSU shooting
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has escalated a criminal investigation into OpenAI, issuing subpoenas over whether ChatGPT bears criminal responsibility for the 2025 Florida State University shooting. Student Phoenix Ikner killed two people and injured six after allegedly consulting the chatbot about the attack, including questions about campus activity and weapons.
Uthmeier's office will examine OpenAI's internal policies, training materials, and law enforcement cooperation to determine if human decisions in ChatGPT's design could warrant criminal liability. OpenAI denied responsibility, stating the chatbot only provided publicly available information and did not encourage harmful activity.
