EU forces Google to open Android AI to rivals
The European Commission has issued preliminary findings ordering Google to grant third-party AI services the same deep Android access currently enjoyed by its own Gemini assistant. Proposed measures include letting rival AI tools send emails, order food, and share photos, plus activation via custom wake words. A public consultation runs until May 13.
Google pushes back, calling the intervention unwarranted and warning it could undermine privacy, security, and device functionality for European users. The company insists Android is already open by design and the AI market sufficiently competitive, framing the DMA enforcement as regulatory overreach.
