ChatGPT Now Imports Patient Data via Epic
OpenAI is integrating ChatGPT Health with Epic's electronic health record system, covering over 325 million patients, allowing clinicians to import and query patient data including appointment notes, lab results, and medications. In some deployments, ChatGPT will work directly within EHR workflows, offering pre-visit reviews and clinical timelines without leaving a patient chart. Access is read-only.
OpenAI is also launching a Healthcare Public Data plug-in pulling from sources like PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov. Despite a 99.1% safety rate across 4,300 physician-reviewed responses, concerns remain, with recent lawsuits alleging ChatGPT provided near-fatal and harmful medical recommendations.
OpenAI plants its flag inside clinical workflows before Google or Microsoft can lock up the Epic relationship.
