ChatGPT Goes Nuclear at Los Alamos Lab
Los Alamos National Laboratory has partnered with OpenAI to install ChatGPT on Venado, one of the world's most powerful supercomputers, now connected to a classified nuclear weapons network. The $320 million Department of Energy initiative, called Genesis Mission, aims to double scientific productivity within a decade.
The partnership continues a long tradition of cutting-edge computing at the birthplace of the atomic bomb, dating back to Manhattan Project-era IBM punch-card machines. Scientists say AI is already transforming research methods, approaching complex problems in unexpected ways — much like those early machines outpaced their human counterparts.
