AI Engine to Transform National Lab Imaging Data
Argonne National Laboratory's SYNAPS-I platform aims to integrate X-ray, neutron, and microscopy data from over 100 beamlines across seven DOE facilities into a single billion-parameter AI model. The system delivers real-time analysis of massive scientific datasets, targeting breakthroughs in microelectronics, medicine, and energy security.
Built as part of DOE's Genesis Mission, SYNAPS-I is designed to act as a 'cognitive partner' for scientists — generating hypotheses and detecting subtle patterns. The team began with ptychography, an X-ray imaging technique, successfully demonstrating high-resolution results fast enough to keep pace with live experiments.
