Utah Approves AI Startup to Issue Acne Prescriptions

Utah has become the first U.S. state to grant an AI startup permission to automate prescription approvals. Nolla Health's Nolla Derm iOS app lets acne sufferers describe their condition, upload a facial photo, and receive a prescription without speaking to a doctor. The AI selects from a shortlist of physician-approved topical treatments, while cases outside set limits go to a human physician. The pilot runs in three stages, progressing from full physician review to monitoring just 10% of prescriptions monthly. The company aims to expand to other common conditions if the pilot succeeds.
