UN Partners With Google to AI-Proof Global Data
The United Nations has launched the UN System Data Commons, built on Google's open source platform, enabling AI systems to access global statistics via natural-language queries and the Model Context Protocol. The system replaces the older UNData portal and aims to bring 80% of UN statistical datasets onto the platform by 2027, with 26 agencies committed and nearly 20 available at launch.
The move comes as AI tools struggle with UN data accuracy. A UNICEF benchmark of six major AI models found an average accuracy score of just 21.2% across 133,000 responses about global development indicators, with roughly three in five responses failing to provide a usable number. Google.org contributed $2 million to support the platform's infrastructure.
