Tech Giants Unite to Squeeze More Data Centers onto Grid
Google, Nvidia, Anthropic, and grid software startup Emerald AI have formed the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA) to expand data center capacity through demand response technology. By pausing noncritical tasks and shifting compute loads, the coalition believes an additional 100 gigawatts of data center capacity could connect to the grid without new power generation. Emerald AI's software connects utilities directly to data centers, enabling faster responses to power demand fluctuations without relying on diesel generators. The startup recently raised $150 million in Series A funding. However, its chief scientist acknowledges the technology will reduce but not eliminate the need for new power sources.
