Tech Giants Unite Against Open-Source AI Ban
Nvidia, Microsoft, IBM, Meta, and over a dozen other tech firms have signed an open letter urging policymakers not to ban open-source AI models. The letter, published on Nvidia's website, follows reports that Trump administration officials considered restricting access to Chinese-developed open-source AI software.
The signatories argue open-source AI reduces costs, spurs competition, and allows public scrutiny of vulnerabilities. While acknowledging risks like potential misuse by hackers, they recommend targeted legal frameworks rather than broad restrictions, and call for easier researcher access to computing infrastructure and training datasets.
