OpenAI Targets Law Firms With GPT-6 Legal Tool
OpenAI has launched Astra for Law, a GPT-6 configuration tailored for legal research and drafting. The product wraps GPT-6 Astra in a legal search index covering over 230 million URLs of U.S. case law, statutes, regulations and court rules, outperforming standard GPT-6 web search with a 54% correctness rate versus 38.7% on legal benchmarks.
Initial access is limited to selected firms via ChatGPT and Codex, with an API version planned but undated. Harvey Technologies and Legora are named API customers. Major firms including Latham and Watkins, Sullivan and Cromwell, Ropes and Gray and Cooley are already building firm-specific tools on the platform.
Even on the test OpenAI chose, the tool answered only about half the legal questions correctly.
