OpenAI Revenue $20 Billion Below Earlier Reports

OpenAI has told investors its annualized revenue is approaching $50 billion, roughly $20 billion less than a $70 billion figure previously reported by news outlets. The Financial Times says the higher number stemmed from investor attempts to compare OpenAI directly with Anthropic, which counts sales made by cloud partners in its revenue calculations while OpenAI does not. The discrepancy adds pressure on the company as it works to justify massive investment, including a $122 billion funding round in March. OpenAI's IPO has also been pushed back to early 2027.
