OpenAI Faces 30 New Tumbler Ridge Shooting Lawsuits
Law firm Edelson PC is filing 30 additional lawsuits against OpenAI this week, expanding on seven complaints filed in April tied to the Tumbler Ridge school shooting that killed eight people. New plaintiffs include teachers, a principal, and students present during the attack. For the first time, the complaints accuse OpenAI of aiding and abetting the massacre, a higher legal bar than negligence.
The filings specifically name Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane as the person who ordered staff not to contact authorities, despite safety team warnings about shooter Jesse Van Rootselaar's ChatGPT activity. OpenAI denies Lehane's involvement, maintaining Van Rootselaar's behavior did not meet its threshold for reporting to law enforcement.
