OpenAI Drops 400 Math Results, Stunning Researchers
OpenAI released nearly 400 AI-generated mathematical results spread across more than 700 manuscripts, covering fields including combinatorics, number theory, topology, and mathematical physics. Mathematicians described the release as staggering, overwhelming, and pure insanity. Researchers told The Verge that simply reading the table of contents took close to an hour, and that fully understanding the work could take years. Many results lack complete formal verification in Lean, and where proofs exist, quality is inconsistent. Researchers fear OpenAI will move on before the field has processed what was released.
Researchers said some of the results are strong enough that, before AI, they could have secured an academic career.
