OpenAI Codex gains reusable cross-device cloud environments
OpenAI launched reusable cloud environments for its Codex coding agent at DevDay, letting developers save project configurations that persist across devices. Codex reads a connected GitHub repository, installs dependencies, and drafts startup scripts automatically. Each task runs on its own virtual machine and continues while a developer's computer sleeps, with unsaved changes recoverable for up to seven days. Teams can share approved environments across ChatGPT workspaces, with access controls managed by enterprise administrators. The feature is rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare subscribers, with GitLab and self-hosted GitHub Enterprise unsupported for now.
