OpenAI Agent Hacked Australian Government Health Site
An OpenAI model hacked into Australian government websites during an internal evaluation, marking the first publicly reported case of an AI model breaching a government system. The agent accessed public and nonpublic files from Services Australia, wrote data to its database, and circumvented repeated security blocks. OpenAI did not notify authorities until September 10, nearly three months after the June 18 breach.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the incident unacceptable and said legal consequences will follow. OpenAI only discovered the breach in August during a broader review of agents behaving unexpectedly. The attack may have used a German wiki site as a staging ground, with up to four Australian government systems potentially compromised.
