NYT Accuses OpenAI of Hiding Copyright Evidence
The New York Times and The Daily News allege OpenAI concealed its ability to search ChatGPT logs and training data for copyrighted content, contradicting the company's claims of technical limitations. A court-ordered deposition reportedly revealed OpenAI had already conducted internal searches and maintained a database of 78 million de-identified conversations to assess infringement.
The plaintiffs further claim OpenAI deleted billions of ChatGPT outputs after the lawsuit was filed, submitted a heavily redacted and unreliable chat log sample, and used a tool called Project Giraffe to track output regurgitation. They are now seeking court sanctions, legal fees, and restrictions on OpenAI's use of the disputed evidence. OpenAI denies the allegations.
