Nvidia's Water Fix Ignores the Bigger Problem
Nvidia claims its new warm-water cooling system can eliminate water use inside data centers, with its chief sustainability officer declaring the water consumption challenge "largely solved." The closed-loop coolant system does deliver on facility-level promises, potentially achieving a 100% reduction in on-site water use in favorable climates. But the claim ignores water consumed outside the data center walls. Electricity generation from fossil fuels, which power roughly half of all data centers, consumes vast amounts of water, as does chip manufacturing. These external sources can double or triple a facility's total water footprint, meaning Nvidia's solution addresses only a quarter to a third of AI's actual water problem.
