Meta Tests Robots to Replace Data Center Workers
Meta is quietly testing robots inside its data centers that can plug in cables, reset servers, and power cycle equipment — tasks currently performed by human technicians. The company is using hardware from vendors including Watney Robotics, Kinova, and ABB, with one worker estimating a cable-swapping robot could replace up to 80 percent of some employees' workloads.
Meta spokesperson Francis Brennan insisted the company needs more workers, not fewer, citing a skilled labor shortage. However, a Meta robotics manager previously stated the company's long-term goal is to deploy robots for incident response and maintenance. Workers at Meta's largest campus in Altoona, Iowa, are reportedly demoralized, with some saying they expect to be replaced within years.
