Meta Launches Downloadable AI, Zuckerberg Backs Open Models
Meta has released Muse Glimmer, a downloadable 30-billion-parameter AI model designed to run on a single graphics card for personal computer use. The model, available free via Hugging Face, focuses on agent-like tasks such as schedule management and file organisation.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg accompanied the launch with a 6500-word essay arguing against centralised AI control, stating superintelligence should be distributed to individuals rather than corporations or governments. His stance challenges rivals OpenAI and Anthropic, who favour restricted access, and enters an intensifying Washington debate over regulating open-weight AI models from Chinese competitors.
