Meta cuts 8,000 jobs to fund AI push
Meta is laying off 10% of its workforce, around 8,000 employees, as it redirects spending toward artificial intelligence. The company plans to invest $135 billion in AI this year alone, nearly matching its total AI spending over the previous three years combined. CEO Mark Zuckerberg says AI tools now allow individuals to do the work of entire teams. The cuts are Meta's largest since its 2023 Year of Efficiency and have unsettled remaining staff, particularly after the company announced it would log employee computer activity to train its AI models. Meta is not alone, with Amazon, Oracle, and Microsoft also cutting thousands of jobs as Silicon Valley bets heavily on AI over human labour.
