Mercor's Data Breach Spirals Into Existential Crisis
AI data training startup Mercor is reeling after a March 31 data breach triggered by malware hidden in open source tool LiteLLM. Hackers claim to have stolen 4TB of data including candidate profiles, source code, and API keys. Meta has indefinitely paused its contracts, five contractors have filed lawsuits, and other major AI companies are reportedly reconsidering their relationships with the firm.
The breach carries enormous stakes for Mercor, which was reportedly on pace to exceed $1 billion in annualized revenue before the incident. The company, valued at $10 billion after a $350 million Series C just six months ago, has declined to comment on the scope of stolen data and says it is still investigating.
