Mamdani Urges New Yorkers to Resist AI Takeover
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani spoke at The People's AI Assembly at Webster Hall Monday, arguing that AI's rapid rollout is not inevitable and that public officials must hold AI companies accountable. He criticized the federal government's failure to regulate AI, calling it a complete abdication. Mamdani has already banned AI in elementary and middle schools and introduced rules requiring landlords to disclose AI-generated listing images. He cited the Pentagon's February strike on an Iranian school, where overreliance on AI targeting killed over 150 people, as evidence of the technology's dangers when left unchecked.
With Washington doing little on AI, Mamdani acted locally, banning it in younger grades and proposing labels for AI listing photos.
