Karpathy Leaves OpenAI Roots, Joins Anthropic

AI pioneer Andrej Karpathy, co-founder of OpenAI and former Tesla AI lead, has joined Anthropic to work on pre-training under team lead Nick Joseph. He will build a team focused on using Claude to accelerate pre-training research, signaling Anthropic's bet that AI-assisted research is key to competing with OpenAI and Google. Karpathy, who most recently ran education startup Eureka Labs, says he remains passionate about education and plans to return to it eventually. Separately, cybersecurity veteran Chris Rohlf, formerly of Meta and Yahoo, has also joined Anthropic's frontier red team to stress-test advanced AI models against severe threats.
