Ireland fines Google $462M for GDPR violations

Ireland's Data Protection Commission has fined Google 403 million euros ($462 million) for illegally collecting user location data in breach of GDPR. The investigation, launched in 2020, examined data collected between May 2018 and February 2020 across three Google features: Web & App Activity, Timeline, and Google Location Accuracy. Google was found to have violated GDPR's lawfulness, fairness, and transparency principles by failing to adequately inform users about its data collection practices. Alongside the fine, Google has been ordered to achieve GDPR compliance within six months. The company stated the case involves historical policies that have since been updated.
