Google's AI Model Revolutionizes Cyclone Forecasting
Google DeepMind's WeatherNext AI model has achieved a breakthrough in cyclone forecasting, delivering an extra day of predictive accuracy over previous models — progress equivalent to a decade of meteorological advancement. The model accurately predicts a cyclone's track, intensity, and wind structure, and already helped issue an advance warning for Hurricane Melissa in 2025.
Google is now open sourcing WeatherNext 2 and WeatherNext Cyclones models, making them freely available for research, operational forecasting, and disaster preparedness. The system generates 1,000 forecast scenarios per cyclone in under a minute, capturing rare but critical events like rapid intensification.
