Google Pushes Gemini AI Into Government Workforces

Google Cloud is targeting government agencies with its Gemini for Government platform, positioning AI as both a productivity tool and modernization engine for what it calls an agentic workforce. Field CTO Chris Hein outlined a phased approach starting with augmenting existing workflows, citing pressure on agencies to deliver more with stagnant headcount. Compliance requirements like FedRAMP and DoD standards are built directly into the platform rather than treated as afterthoughts. Google also emphasizes model flexibility through Vertex AI, allowing agencies to choose from multiple AI options to avoid vendor lock-in while modernizing legacy systems, including decades-old COBOL applications.
