Google Pushes Devs to Use AI for PostgreSQL Work
Google is encouraging its database engineers to rely heavily on AI coding tools to accelerate contributions to open source projects, particularly PostgreSQL. The company says productivity gains are significant, but individual developers remain accountable for all code submitted, regardless of how much AI assistance was involved.
Google's push comes as the entire cloud industry ramps up PostgreSQL investment, with Microsoft and AWS also making major contributions. PostgreSQL became the most popular developer database in 2023, driven by cloud migrations away from Oracle, IBM Db2, and SQL Server, and demand continues to grow for both new applications and legacy system replacements.
