Google Open Sources AI Cyclone Prediction Models
Google has open sourced its WeatherNext 2 and WeatherNext Cyclones AI models, which achieve state-of-the-art accuracy in predicting cyclone track, intensity, and wind structure up to 15 days ahead. Published in Nature, the research shows the models provide an extra day of predictive accuracy over prior systems, representing roughly a decade of meteorological progress. The models overcome a longstanding trade-off between global and localized forecasting by using a single AI trained on nearly 20 terabytes of atmospheric data and 5,000 historical storms. Google says the models are available for academic research, operational forecasting, and developing specialized localized models.
