Google DeepMind Launches Most Accurate Weather AI Yet

Google DeepMind and Google Research have unveiled WeatherNext 3, their most advanced global weather AI model, rated top by independent evaluator Brightband. The model generates hourly forecasts at up to 5-kilometer resolution, five times sharper than its predecessor, by ingesting live geostationary satellite data instead of relying solely on traditional numerical weather prediction models. The system trains directly on real weather station observations, enabling detailed local forecasts for regions historically underserved by high-resolution prediction, including parts of Latin America, Africa, and Asia-Pacific. It also introduces specialized forecasts for renewable energy, including turbine-height wind speeds and solar radiation levels to support clean energy planning.
