Google adds selfie video for account recovery

Google has launched an opt-in selfie video feature for account recovery, allowing users to record a short clip with guided head movements to verify their identity when standard sign-in methods fail. The video is stored encrypted, can be deleted anytime, and is used solely for identity verification unless the user opts otherwise. The system is designed to resist deepfakes and static image spoofing through liveness detection and comparison against the enrolled selfie. It complements existing recovery tools like passkeys, which Google has supported since 2023 and reported surpassing 1 billion authentications in 2024. Users can enroll at g.co/signin-selfie.
