Ghanaian Scientist Uses AI Chip to Transform Drug Research
Dr. Ofosua Klozie Adi-Dako, a University of Ghana pharmacy lecturer and Schmidt Global Faculty Fellow, is revolutionizing drug discovery using a self-designed microchip and artificial intelligence at Imperial College London. The transparent chip runs thousands of simultaneous experiments, mimicking human intestinal membranes to test drug permeability — work that traditionally required months and multiple scientists.
AI models analyze the chip's massive data output, detecting patterns invisible to human researchers and reducing the need for animal testing. Dr. Adi-Dako plans to bring the technology back to Ghana, where it could accelerate research into local natural compounds, offering faster, cheaper, and more accurate drug development solutions.
