DeepMind CEO Proposes Independent AI Standards Body

Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has called for a new self-regulatory body to oversee frontier AI model releases, modeled after the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. The proposed standards body would review models up to 30 days before release, develop best practices, and address post-release vulnerabilities, funded by the AI industry but operated independently. The proposal builds on existing ad hoc government reviews of models from Anthropic and OpenAI, which faced criticism for lacking technical expertise. Hassabis envisions the body staffed by open source representatives and industry experts, with evaluations potentially outsourced to AI safety groups specializing in specific risks.
